Success in Direct Sales



What is the key to success in direct sales? In my opinion, the key to success in direct sales consists of three simple steps. If you do these three things you will make money and have fun. But if you don’t do these three things, you will fail. It’s really that simple. Here are the three steps:

1. Treat Your Business Like a Real Business: Owning a direct sales business is a real business. Most people who get involved with direct sales have no prior entrepreneurial, sales or marketing experience. Instead, they have only been employees. Additionally, most direct sales folks don’t treat their business like a real business. They might spend one hour this week building their business and then do nothing the following week. And then they bitch and complain about why they aren’t making money with their business. The people who make a substantial income in direct sales take a different approach. They treat their business as if they had a million dollars invested in it. If you want success in direct sales, you need to adopt a similar mindset.

2. Work the Numbers: Selling is a numbers game. If you consistently share your products and business opportunity with others, you will produce positive results. It’s inevitable. If you share your products with 100 people, you will find 20 to 40 customers, minimum. But the first 20 people you talk with might say no. You will only find the 20 to 40 customers after you’ve talked to all 100 people. In other words, you must work the numbers. The most successful direct sales professionals share their products and business opportunity with 5-20 people per week, often more than that.

3. Consistent Action: Consistency is the third key to direct sales success. You must take consistent action. That means you must do something every day, every week, every month, etc. You can’t work for a week and then take a week off. When you do this, you lose momentum in your business. You don’t have to be consistent if you’re simply trying to make a couple hundred bucks each month. But if you want the big money you must work your business every single day. And when you work, you must focus your time and effort on tasks that generate revenue. This includes prospecting, sharing the products and business opportunity, taking orders, and following up with clients and prospects.

Following these three steps will help you achieve success in direct sales. It really boils down to taking ownership of your business, being accountable for your actions, and sharing your products and business opportunity with new prospects every day. That is the key to success.

Most people don’t get the results they desire in direct sales because they don’t do the work. They don’t put in the required effort, find new retail customers and sponsor other independent consultants. Instead, they treat their business like a hobby and work when they feel like it. And then they wonder why they don’t get the results they desire.

So don’t kid yourself. Success in direct sales is simple, but not easy. You have to do the work. You won’t get rich overnight. But you can make a substantial income in this industry by doing what other successful direct sales professionals did. I hope that helps.
