If you’re thinking about starting your own online business, that’s a wise move. The internet has totally leveled the playing field, giving anyone the chance to build an international business from the comfort of their own home. But where do you begin? What is the best business model? Fortunately, there are many different online business models. Your key to success is to find something you understand and are passionate about. For instance, you could start an eBay business. Or, you could join a network marketing company and build an online business. Or, you could write articles for other people. Listed below, I will share some of the most popular online business models. Popular Online Business Models 1. Blogging 2. Membership Sites 3. Selling eBooks 4. Online Stores 5. Infopreneuring 6. Affiliate Marketing 7. Freelance Writing 8. Coaching 9. Consulting 10. Marketing Specialist Or, you could come up with your own unique business model. That’s what I love about the starting your own online business. You have so many different options. Best of all, starting your own online business is easy to do and doesn’t cost much either. Getting Started In my opinion, the best way to get started is to take out a piece of paper and make a list of potential business ideas. If you can’t think of any business ideas, simply make a list of things you are passionate about. Try to come up with at least 10-20 ideas. Once you are finished, brainstorm 3 business models for each idea. Here is an example: Some of my passions include: 1. Building Websites 2. Writing 3. Network Marketing 4. Selling Stuff Potential business models for my passions include: 1. Network Marketing: Build a website about network marketing, build a MLM business, write eBooks about MLM, sell coaching for network marketers, website design for network marketers 2. Sell Stuff: Sell stuff on eBay, build an ecommerce store, write an eBook about selling stuff online 3. Writing: Write eBooks, freelance writing for other people, create a course about how to make money freelance writing 4. Websites: Build a website about something I am passionate about, design websites for other people, create a course about building websites As you can see, I came up with at least three business models for each of my passions. And this exercise only took me a few minutes. If you sit down at your kitchen table and do this exercise, you will come up with plenty of ideas. I think it's important to find something you are passionate about, so you don't get bored. If you're going to spend a big portion of your life building a business, it might as well be geared around something you are passionate about! Evaluting Each Business Idea Once you finish brainstorming your passions and potential business ideas, you need to rank them. Rank your passions first. Put a # 1 by your biggest passion, a # 2 by your second biggest passion and so forth. Next, rank each potential business idea for each passion. Put a (1) by the business idea that excites you the most, a (2) by the second most exciting idea and so forth. This will give you a very clear understanding about which business models excite you the most. Once you have a big list of ideas, you must research each idea, to evaluate your competition and find out what it takes to get started. Research Your Ideas Now that you’ve ranked everything, you can begin your research. Start with your biggest passion and research each business model. Find out who your competitors are. Learn how they make money. Try to determine what the start-up costs will be. See if the idea still interests you. I've learned that most entrepreneurs fail because they don't do enough planning. They think their idea or product is the key to success. Instead, I've found that your ability to market and promote your idea, product or business is more important than the idea itself. So, if you are serious about starting your own online business, you will do plenty of research. You might even find out that your #1 business idea is flooded with competition. Or, you might find out that very few people are interested in your idea (as a customer). You will never know if you don't do your homework first. Getting Started Once you choose your favorite business idea, you can get started on a part-time basis. By all means, don’t quit your day job! Keep your paycheck and build your business after work and at night. Keep doing so for a few years, until your online business income exceeds your job income. At this point in time, you will have options. You can keep working your job, or you can quit and do your business full time. Whatever you do, don’t think your idea is crazy or won’t work. There are plenty of unique business models online such as Craigslist, Facebook, eBay, Amazon, and others. When those businesses first launched, I’m sure people thought the owners were a little bit crazy. But look how things turned out! Final Thoughts about Starting Your Own Online Business Starting your own online business is a wise decision. Everyone should have a "Plan B" to give them an exit strategy from their job and improve their standard of living. The easiest way to do this is to create an online, home-based business.
