Starting a Small Business Online
Everyone should think about starting a small business online. The major benefits of doing so include: extra income, save money on taxes, a plan B from your job, personal satisfaction, and personal growth. In today’s world, there’s no such thing as job security any more. You could go to work tomorrow and be fired, without reason. You can’t have all your eggs in one basket either. You need multiple streams of income. If your well being relies on one source of income, you’re in trouble. Because when that income stops, your well-being suffers. Does that make sense? Starting a small business online puts you in control of your own future. You call the shots. Now, you can get paid what you are worth, not what your job is worth. Potential Online Business Ideas There are many potential ideas for starting a small business online. Some of the most common ideas include network marketing, online auctions, blogging, infopreneuring, membership sites, eBooks, paid surveys, coaching services, website design, consulting and more. You can follow a proven business model or develop one of your own. The sky really is the limit. If this is your first business venture, I think it’s a wise idea to choose a proven business model and follow that, while you learn the ropes and hone your entrepreneurial skills. Once you become internet savvy, you can branch off and expand your idea. Steps to Business Success Listed below, you will find my ten steps to success. 1. Pick Something You are Passionate About: If you’re going to have an online business for a long time, you might as well pick something you are passionate about. Why not make money doing something that you enjoy? 2. Choose Your Business Model: Once you brainstorm a few potential business ideas, you need to pick your business model. Some of the common online business models include: websites, blogs, online stores, online auctions, network marketing, membership sites, infopreneuring, eBooks, and more. 3. Develop a Game-Plan: Your next step is to develop a game-plan. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Most new entrepreneurs simply jump into their new business without putting any significant thought into how they will make their business succeed. Don’t make this common mistake. Develop a business plan and marketing plan for your new business. 4. Determine Capital Requirements: All businesses require some form of capital investment. Try to brainstorm how much money you will need to launch your idea, and then double it (just to be safe). I don’t recommend you go into debt to build your online business. Try to use a portion of your savings or find creative ways to pay for it. 5. Get Started: Now, you are ready to get started. Once you have a game-plan in place, it’s time to start your business. 6. Find a Mentor: I think it’s a wise move to find a mentor. Find someone who has already accomplished what you are trying to accomplish and learn from them. Ask them questions. Seek their input. This will save you time and money in the long run. 7. Keep Your Day Job: If you have a day job, keep it. Starting a small business online takes time. You probably won’t make a profit right away. So keep your day job to pay your bills and keep the monkey off your back. Don’t quit your job until you have a large cache of cash stored up in your savings account, and your income from your small business replaces your job income. 8. Never Quit: It amazes me how many small business owners quit. Don’t make that common mistake. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It will take time (probably years) to build a profitable and successful business. Just continue making small improvements each day and over a period of time you will get better. Adapt, don't quit! 9. Be a Student of Your Profession: One of the things I learned in the Army was the importance of being a student of your profession. You should read books, attend seminars and talk with successful business owners with similar businesses. Share ideas. Help each other. Keep learning and growing. 10. Monitor Your Progress: You need to develop some type of monthly tracking sheets to monitor your progress. At a minimum, you need a monthly profit and loss statement. You also need a balance sheet. Other things to consider are key metrics for your online business, such as newsletter subscribers, website visitors, new leads, etc. You should always keep your finger on the pulse and know the key numbers for your business. And if you can see that you are making progress each month, you will stay motivated. Final Thoughts Starting a small business online is a wise move. The internet is a very powerful medium that allows the average person to build a successful global business, right from the comfort of your own home. Best of all, you can get started while you have a day job. This means you don’t need to give up your job security while you build your Plan B. The biggest benefit of starting a small business online is that you can have options. You can supplement your current income, or even replace it. And you can have the time freedom to do what you want to do, when you want to do it. You won’t need to worry about having a bunch of employees either. You can be your own boss, work at home, make lots of money, and control your own schedule. I think that’s a win-win deal!
