Brainstorm Potential Ideas

If you're looking for an online business to start, it’s important to make a laundry list of potential business ideas. Make a list of 10-30 potential business ideas that excite you or interest you. This could include building websites, writing eBooks, consulting, selling stuff on eBay, paid surveys, creating training courses, building membership sites or hundreds of other viable business ideas. Write down whatever comes to your mind first.

Evaluate Each Idea

After you finish brainstorming ideas, your next task is to evaluate each idea. This means you need to research each idea, to find potential business models and evaluate your competition. You won’t know if your idea is good or not if you don’t do your homework first. You might find out that your potential business idea is already saturated and overly competitive. Or, you might find out that one of your ideas is a potential gold mine. I recommend you spend a couple weeks researching your ideas.

Pick the Best Idea

After you finish evaluating each idea, your next step is to pick the best potential idea. This might (or might not) be your favorite idea. Once you pick the best idea, you need to develop a game-plan. This is also known as your business plan. You should also create a marketing plan. I recommend you keep these documents to two to five pages in length. You don't want to write a book. Instead, you want something that is simple and practical.

The purpose of developing these plans is to help think you through your business building process. Most entrepreneurs just “jump into” their business without developing a strategy first. This is a big mistake. Try to estimate potential start up costs, expenses, capital requirements, and identify the most important tasks you will need to get done.

Find a Mentor

Having a mentor will save you time and money. Ideally, you should find someone who has already accomplished what you want to accomplish. You can pick their brain and learn from their mistakes, so you won’t have to make the same mistakes.Even if you have to pay for your mentor, it would be worth it. Looking back, I wish I would have had someone to show me the ropes when I first got started with my online businesses. Everyone looking for an online business to start needs a mentor to show them the ropes, educate them and help keep them motivated.

Get Started

Once you find an online business to start, your next step is to get started. Taking action is very important. In fact, this is what separates the warriors from the wimps. Anyone can dream big, but it takes a special person to take action and get started. It’s all about having a goal and taking baby steps toward your goal. Remember, it doesn't matter what type of plan you have, or how big your goal is, if you don't take action!

Stay Focused and Consistent for Two to Five Years

This is probably the hardest step for most people. Most people who start their own online business expect overnight success. As a result, they try a business for a few months don’t get the results they want, and then quit. I think this is pathetic. After all, you’ve probably been working in a job for most of your adult life, and that didn’t give you the financial freedom you want, but you didn't quit working in a job, did you?

If you want to build a real, legitimate business, you must commit to making it successful. That means you must get started, and work your business every day for two to five years (minimum) before you can expect to make any type of significant income. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s the truth.

You can’t expect to build a successful online business overnight; especially if you don’t have any prior entrepreneurial or online experience. So do yourself a favor and set realistic expectations. That way you aren’t disappointed.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, if you are looking for an online business to start, I applaud you. We need more entrepreneurs. The internet is here to stay. More importantly, the internet gives the average person a change to build a successful business from the comfort of their own home, without having to risk much capital.

Although there is no guarantee of success, I think it’s a good move to have a Plan B, so you can improve your financial situation. Although you won’t get rich quick, you can build a substantial income within a few short years, by working your business part-time. Simply put, it’s a win-win situation.
