How to Be a Good MLM Sponsor

What is a MLM sponsor? A MLM sponsor is the person who brings someone into a network marketing business. They are the business who shares the business opportunity with someone, helps the join the company and trains them. Simply put a sponsor is like a “personal coach” for the network marketing industry.

Within our industry, there are good sponsors and bad sponsors. Most of the time, people are bad sponsors. I don’t think they do that intentionally. I think it “just happens.” I define a bad MLM sponsor as someone who doesn’t help someone get started the right way. They either have no experience at sponsoring people or they are so busy sponsoring so many new distributors that they don’t spend adequate time with their new people.

When someone joins this industry, there is an incubation period. I call it the first 30-90 days. During the first 30-90 days people are excited. They’re excited to have their own business and the opportunity to earn a residual income. Although they are excited, they are also fragile. They don’t know what they’re doing. They know nothing about the products or the company. And they don’t know how to present the business opportunity to others.

The excitement is similar to dating. For the first few dates, and sometimes longer, the two people only see the “good things” in each other. They’re attracted to each other, perhaps in lust, but they don’t know anything about each other. In most cases, within a month or two the infatuation wears off and reality sets in. That’s the way it is for most new MLM distributors. That’s why a good MLM sponsor has a critical role during those first few months.

When you sponsor someone into the business, you have an obligation to help them. If you don’t know how to help your new distributors, coordinate with your upline so they can help. At a minimum, you need to do the following activities:

• Name List: Help your new distributor make a prospect list with 500 to 1,000 names. Sit down with them for an hour or two in person or on the phone. Don’t stop until you have at least 500 names. Teach them the importance of building a large prospect list. They will duplicate this with their downline, so teach them the right way to do it.

• Nuts & Bolts: Spend an hour or two reviewing the business. Teach them the “nuts and bolts” of the business. Teach them how to order products, sign up new distributors, and sign up customers. This is an important role for a MLM sponsor.

• Product Orientation: Review the company’s products with them. If you can sit down with them in person, bring a product pack with you and review all of the company’s products. Let them touch the products and check them out. If they have questions, answer them. If possible, help them place their first product order.

• Review Compensation Plan: Teach your new distributors how they will get paid. Explain the compensation plan and teach them about how they earn money. Explain the retail markup and the bonus structure. Help them set goals and show them what activities they need to do to reach those goals. For instance, if they want to earn $500 their first month, show them how to do that.

• Present the Business Opportunity to Prospects: This is the most important step. After you’ve done the other things, offer to do a 3-way call or face-to-face presentation with them and their prospects. Do a few calls with them and help them sponsor a distributor or two. Do this a few times until they sponsor a couple people or they are comfortable doing the presentation themselves.

Simply put, you need to be a good MLM sponsor and help your new distributors achieve success in their first few months in the business. If you can help them get a few retail customers and/or sponsor new distributors, you will help them earn money right away. This will keep them enthusiastic about the business opportunity while they learn the ropes.
