MLM Prospecting



What is MLM prospecting? It is the process of meeting new people and sharing your business opportunity with them. In old school MLM, face-to-face prospecting was the most common way of finding new distributors. In modern times, face-to-face prospecting is still a very effective way to meet new people. But it’s not the only way to find new distributors.

I say it time-and-time again, but MLM is simply a numbers game. If you share your business with lots of people you will achieve success. And if you don’t share your business opportunity with lots of people, you will fail. You will improve your chances even more if you can find qualified prospects to share your business opportunity with. In order to meet new prospects you have several options. You can use the Internet or conduct MLM prospecting face-to-face.

For my network marketing business, I rely mostly on the Internet. However, when I meet someone sharp when I am out and about doing errands, I talk with them. Typically, I look for successful entrepreneurs such as lawyers, doctors and accountants. I also look for people with an outgoing personality or people in the sales profession. If they are friendly with me and ask me what I do for a living, I tell them that I help people make money online.

If they ask me how, I tell them that I am a home-based entrepreneur who utilizes the internet to grow a profitable network marketing business. If they express interest, I get their name and number or give them my business card. I take a casual approach to meeting new people, rather than acting like a hunter on an African safari.

If you conduct MLM prospecting face-to-face, you should use a similar approach. If you come across as desperate or use high pressure sales tactics, you won’t find any prospects. Instead, you want to be calm, cool and confident. Also, you shouldn’t stalk people or try to prospect everyone you meet. You should look for qualified people who want extra streams of income, not people who NEED more income.

The best advice I can give you is to simply be nice to people. Say hello to strangers. Strike up conversations with people and ask them how their day is going. Talk about the weather. If possible, find out what they do for a living or where they are from. If they are positive and friendly and ask you what you do for a living, tell them. If they express interest in what you do for a living, give them your business card. If they don’t express interest, leave them alone and talk with someone else.

MLM prospecting isn’t complicated. Instead, people make it complicated. Because most network marketers are desperate to build their business, they will prospect everyone. In my first MLM business, I did the same thing. I would spend three or four hours a day at a Barnes & Noble bookstore, and try to meet new prospects. I would talk to everyone. If I saw someone with a pulse, I would walk over to them and strike up a conversation.

I would commit entire weekends just for prospecting. It consumed my life. I turned away dates because I was busy doing MLM prospecting. I even got thrown out of a couple establishments for harassing the customers. I recommend you don’t follow this approach. Instead, just be yourself. For example, if you are at the grocery store and you see someone who looks sharp, simply say hello and see where the conversation takes you. That’s the best advice I can give anyone.

On the other hand, you can also use the Internet for MLM prospecting. There are several effective ways to do this. Here are a few simple tips that work well for me.

• Email Signature: Put an email link to your business opportunity in the signature file of your email. Most people send 10-20 emails per day. If you do that, some people will visit your website and be interested in learning more about your business opportunity. Your job is to follow up with them and answer their questions. Once again, posture and follow-up are the key to success.

• Visit Blogs and Forums: You can visit MLM blogs and forums on Facebook and other internet sites to meet other network marketers. You can simply post messages with a link to your website. Be sure to add value to your comments. Don’t come across as a spammer.

• Your Website: This is the simplest and easiest way to find prospects. Everyone in MLM needs their own personal website where they can generate their own prospects and leads. At a minimum, you should have a simple 20 to 50 page website with information about yourself and your business opportunity. You should have a “contact me” page or a web-form where visitors can enter their contact information. Your job is to follow up with them in a timely manner.

In conclusion, MLM prospecting is very easy to do. You can use the Internet or face-to-face approach. The secret to success is to come across as a poised, calm and confident person that other people are attracted too. You simply need to strike up conversations with people you meet in everyday life and ask them questions.

When people ask you what you do, you need to have a simple two to three sentence answer that will arouse curiosity. If and only if they express interest, you can give them your business card or get their contact information and follow-up with them a day or two later. I hope you follow the advice in this article. If you do, you will succeed in MLM prospecting.
