In this article, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own home MLM business. Please keep in mind that most network marketers work their businesses part-time, until they earn enough money to quit their job. However, most top earners quit their job and work their network marketing business full-time from home. Whether you are part-time or full-time is irrelevant when it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of working from home.

Benefits of Owning a Home Business

So, what are some of the benefits of a owning your own home MLM business? Well, here are a few things that come to mind.

1. No Boss: Personally, I hate having a boss. What about you? I like the independence of making my own decisions and calling the shots. When you are an entrepreneur, you don’t have anyone else to answer too. In my opinion, that’s a good thing.

2. Control Your Schedule: Some people don’t enjoy working the traditional nine to five schedule. After you figure in most people’s commute, it’s more like eight to six anyway. Personally, I’m a night owl. I am more productive at night. Since I am my own boss, I can sleep in each morning and work at night. It works great for me.

3. No Commute: Most people in America commute about two hours per day. That’s one hour to work and one hour home. Depending on traffic, it can take even longer. When you commute, you lose productive time. If you commute two hours per day, you will end up commuting over 500 hours per year. That’s the equivalent of almost 21 days. You can never get that time back either.

4. Low Overhead: Most traditional business owners have enormous overhead expenses. When you work from home, you won’t need to rent another office space or another building. You won’t have many additional utilities costs either. Your biggest expenses are an office phone and your internet connection.

5. No Employees: I like being a one man show. Employees are a hassle. When you own your own home MLM business, you won’t need any employees. And if you do need extra help, you can sub-contract the work out or hire your kids.

6. No Inventory: Another benefit of a home MLM business is that you won’t have any inventory. Most modern MLM companies take care of the inventory for you. You simply find new customers and take their orders. The company takes care of the rest. Most traditional business owners spend tens of thousands of dollars each month on inventory, hoping they will sell it quickly.

7. Work In Your Underwear: This might sound crazy to you, but it’s nice not having a dress code. As a home-based entrepreneur, you can work in your underwear, pajamas or be naked. Try doing that at your job tomorrow and see what happens.

8. Work With Spouse: If your spouse is involved in your MLM business with you, you can work together, in pursuit of a common goal.

9. Tax Incentives: The IRS gives entrepreneurs tax incentives that employees do not have. As an entrepreneur you can save an enormous amount of money on taxes. If you have a home-office, you can write off a portion of your mortgage, insurance, utilities, phone and so forth. It’s a great way to save money.

There are many other benefits of a home MLM business too, but these are the things that come to the top of my mind.

Drawbacks of Having a Home Business

On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages of a home MLM business. Although the list is fairly small, I’d like to keep you in the loop anyway. If you’ve never been a home-based entrepreneur before, here are some of the things you might need to overcome.

1. No Steady Paycheck: This is the biggest struggle more new entrepreneurs. If you have many years experience as an employee, you are used to receiving a paycheck regularly. Normally, you get paid weekly or bi-weekly. As home MLM business owner, it won’t work like that. Instead, you will need to produce sales and sign up new distributors to get paid. If you don’t do that you will go broke quick. That’s why it’s recommended that you keep your day job until you earn a nice monthly income with your home MLM business.

2. No Set Work Schedule: Some people like working set hours. In addition, some people are naturally procrastinators and/or slackers. It’s easy to waste a few hours here, and a few hours there. In other words, it’s easy to become distracted. Therefore, you need to be disciplined and set specific office hours. During your officer hours stay busy. Don’t watch television, visit with friends, etc. Only focus on tasks that grow your MLM business.

3. No Structure: This goes hand-in-hand with the “no set work schedule” example. Some people need structure. If you can’t establish a work schedule and stick to it, you will probably struggle with your business.

4. Little Interaction with Others: If you are an extrovert, being at home all day by yourself can be a nightmare. On the other hand, if you are naturally introverted, you might want to be home all day by yourself. If you need interaction with other people, make sure you schedule in time to run errands, go to the gym, visit friends, and socialize. It’s okay to do all these things as long as you don’t do it during office hours.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are many advantages and disadvantages to owning a home MLM business. It’s a great lifestyle, but it’s not for everyone. At a minimum, all network marketers should set up a home-office and tax advantage of the tax incentives that the IRS gives entrepreneurs. However, most network marketers shouldn’t go full-time in their MLM business until they earn enough money to replace their job income.
